Born to Ride

I don’t have a photo, but the most people I’ve ever seen on a motorcycle is six.

Picture this:

  • Dad driving with his young son standing between his legs.
  • Mom sitting behind dad, holding two babies, one in each arm.
  • Another young child, a daughter, standing in between mom and dad.

This was in Indonesia where there are a lot of motorcycles. I’ve seen stats that there were 120 million bikes on the roads of this island nation in 2021. That’s close to every second person having wheels, and it far surpasses the 23 million cars that navigate the myriad of paved arteries.

The motorcycles aren’t massive like the ones we have here in Canada. They’re more along the lines of what we would consider an entry level bike so it’s pretty impressive to see how creative drivers get when it comes to carrying cargo.

I’ve spotted planks of plywood, park benches, even the limbs of mannequins on the backs of bikes. The more they caught my eye, the more I started watching for them.

Here’s a sample of what I snapped. Which one speaks to you?
